Dialysis:

This is a treatment given to patients with kidney failure. There are two types of dialysis treatments: Haemodialysis and Peritoneal dialysis. Both these forms of dialysis treatment are available in our hospital.
We have a large Haemodialysis unit with a facility to treat 40 patients at a time. This is one of the largest in the country. Patients are treated using modern state of the art dialysis machines. Very pure microbe free reverse osmosis treated water is used for haemodialysis purposes.

Excellent patient monitoring during dialysis and personalised care by technically qualified dialysis staff are ensured. Patient’s condition is monitored continuously throughout the treatment.
There is always a well trained Medical officer present to supervise dialysis treatment. Patients are protected from cross infection by stringent isolation of patients and equipments. Even wash areas are different for different groups of patients.

There are separate dialysis areas for hepatitis virus infected patients.
Our Dialysis unit is organized very well giving correct appointments by date and time for each patient’s dialysis. Patients are expected to come 30 minutes before the appointed time.

Patient’s condition is monitored continuously throughout the treatment and by monthly tests , annual scans , cardiology and other specialist opinions.
Patient is seen by the nephrologist at each dialysis visit.

Thus dialysis unit provides personal and professional and up to date care and rehabilitates patients excellently.

Peritoneal Dialysis:

This can either the intermittent peritoneal dialysis up to two or three times intermittently in a patient. This is done after patient gets admitted. The duration of one treatment is usually 24 hours. This used to be done for reversible kidney procedure. Many patients may not require this for more than a few times as they have reversible kidney failure.

The other form of peritoneal dialysis is usually done in patients with chronic kidney diseases and end stage renal failure. This is called continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis. This involves permanent placing of a very flexible peritoneal dialysis catheter inside the peritoneal cavity of the patient. This is usually done under general anaesthesia by a trained surgeon. After this catheter is fixed in the abdomen nearly 2 litres of peritoneal dialysis solution is infused into the abdomen and taken out after 4 hours. During this time of 4 hours waste substances from the blood of patient diffuse into the fluid and reduce the level of waste concentration in the body.

This fluid is removed at the end of 4hrs and fresh fluid is infused. It is repeated three times daily. This can also be done at home in a sterile manner. It will be helpful if another person at home with proper training in this is present to help the patient.

These patients do not come to hospital daily. They are supposed to visit Nephrologist once a month.
The company that supplies fluid sends technicians to help patients at home if there are any problem at home. Patient usually take supply for one month at a time.

Proper adherence to sterile techniques and consistent follow up of doctor’s instruction are essential for this form of treatment to be done without complication. This is called Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD).

This CAPD treatment is ideal for patients who cannot travel to haemodialysis centre or have complications during haemodialysis. We have specialised in care of these patients. Our Nephrologist Dr.Damodharan Pachaippan is one of the most experienced Nephrologists in carrying out and supervising CAPD treatment.
